Overview

Choquequirao, long known as the “lost city of the Incas,” was once mistakenly identified as the legendary Paititi. Today, many travelers claim its mysticism even surpasses that of Machu Picchu. Therefore, our recommendation is clear: to truly understand the Inca legacy, visiting both citadels is essential.

The surroundings offer a spectacular display of geographical contrasts—a mosaic of microclimates ranging from high jungle and cloud forests to Andean peaks exceeding 6,000 meters. It was here that the resistance of Manco Inca flourished following the invasion. Under the leadership of rulers such as Sayri Túpac and Túpac Amaru I, a Neo-Inca State was forged to safeguard the astronomical knowledge, sacred rites, and traditions of a civilization that refused to vanish.

Altitude: 1,500 – 3,030 meters

Season: Year-round

Duration: 5 Days – 4 Nights

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Itinerary:

Day 01: Cusco – Cachora – Chiquisqa (3350 – 2850 – 1930m)

Early in the morning, we head northwest from Cusco (3350m) in a transport towards the town of Cachora (2850m).

Cachora is surrounded by mountains and the majestic snow-capped peak of Padrayoc (5571m).

This is where we meet the horsemen and mules who will carry all the camping equipment throughout this expedition.

As we start walking, passing through different ecological levels, we reach the Capuliyoc pass (2800m), where we can see the Apurímac Canyon and part of the Choquequirao archaeological complex.

We descend in a serpent-like fashion along the mountain’s edge to our campsite at Chiquisqa (1930m).

Hiking Time: 7 hours in a warm climate.
Includes: Lunch and Dinner.

Day 02: Chiquisqa – Playa Rosalina – Marampata – Choquequirao.

After a nutritious breakfast, we start our descent for about an hour to Playa Rosalina (1500m). From here, we begin the ascent out of the canyon in a warm climate to Marampata (2850m), where we enjoy a beautiful view of the Choquequirao archaeological complex.

The sunset phenomenon is enigmatic in Choquequirao, accompanied by an Andean symbol, the Condor, which descends from the highest mountains of the Vilcabamba range to the Choquequirao archaeological complex (3033m).

We camp close to the complex.

Hiking Time: 7 hours in warm and cold weather.
Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 03: Choquequirao ” The sacred sister of Machu Picchu”

We spend the entire day exploring the citadel, watching the sunrise, and visiting the complete site.

Hiking Time: 7 hours in warm and cold weather.
Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 04: Choquequirao – Chiquisqa

Early in the morning after breakfast, we head back to the Choquequirao archaeological complex for a one-hour walk to observe the sunrise.

We spent about three hours visiting this important Inca refuge, guided by our knowledgeable guide.

At a specified time, we start our return to the camp, descending to Santa Rosa for lunch, then continuing to Playa Rosalina and eventually to Chiquisqa (two hours away), where we set up camp.

Hiking Time: 6 hours in a warm and cold climate.
Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 05: Chiquisqa – Santa Rosa – Cusco

After a good breakfast at our Chiquisqa camp at 06:00 AM, we begin our return along the same path to Cachora.

This descent is gentler with a two-hour ascent until we reach the Capuliyoc pass and then a two-hour journey to Cachora, where we arrive around noon.

During this route, we’ll appreciate plenty of flora and fauna, panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, and the impressive Apurímac canyon, considered the most spectacular in South America.

Upon reaching Cachora, we enjoy a delicious lunch and then continue our return to Cusco.

Our service ends with the transfer to the hotel.
